How important is sustainability in JAB ANSTOETZ‘s corporate philosophy?
Sustainability is very important to us. Not because everyone is talking about this at the moment, but out of conviction and responsibility for future generations. As early as 2004, we took the first sustainable measures in the field with what was then the second largest photovoltaic plant in northern Germany.
But we don‘t just see sustainability in the areas of environment and energy, but also in our fundamental issues: In the quality of our products and in our dealings with each other, both within the JAB ANSTOETZ Group and outside with our partners in over 80 countries.
Like our father Heinz Anstoetz, we run our company under the aspect of „optimization“. Optimization requires long-term thinking that places a high value on human, social and ecological aspects. Accordingly, these have always been an integral part of our corporate mission statement.
Would you agree that the understanding of sustainability has changed in society?
Absolutely. Because the consequences of overexploitation in our world are now visible and noticeable to everyone. As a result, changes are being made today in a wide variety of areas. Many of them are positive and effective. However, we have to make sure that activities or products are not put in a „green coat” of sustainability if at best when they are viewed superficially, or out of the wrong motivation, they deserve the term „sustainable“.
How do you measure sustainability? Are there any key figures that can provide information about success?
Of course there are key figures. For example, how many kilowatt hours of environmentally friendly electricity our photovoltaic plant and our biogas combined heat and power plants produce and how many tons of CO2 we save each year through the two plants.
But that‘s only a part of it. Sustainability also implies the sum of all the many smaller, sometimes incalculable measures, such as the use of environmentally friendly paper, energetically correct heating, recycling of paper waste and much more, all of which have a sustainable effect. Recognizing such potential and further developing our company’s sustainability feature is high on the agenda of our employees and us, for the coming years.
JAB ANSTOETZ is also involved in the social area. Are there any projects you are particularly proud of?
The Matthias Anstoetz Foundation, which our father established in honour of his father, is certainly worth mentioning here. Since then the foundation has supported numerous projects for poor and handicapped children in developing countries, mainly in India.
The Jeevan Jyoti School in Varanasi is a lighthouse project where well over 200 blind children can live and learn. For those who pay a visit to this school, the word „sustainability” is once again fulfilled with a completely different dimension and meaning.
Are there any issues that JAB ANSTOETZ particularly cares about?
It is important to us to get our employees and all friends of the company not only to talk about environmental protection and sustainability, but to set an example and really take the part. In concrete terms this means, for example, making business trips as much as possible by train, to really get to work with the JOB e-bikes financed by the company, to use the JOB ticket paid by the company and to leave the car at home. Important steps for us are to volunteer to help other people - but also to really talk to each other during the breaks.
We have a good working atmosphere, interpersonal relationships, the appreciation of everyone at heart. There are so many other good examples of how sustainability and environmental protection can be implemented. Everyone can contribute to this.
